Clay Scarab Beetle Amulets, pt. 2

Our amulets were fired and ready to be glazed. We went back to our photographic examples for ideas. I always 'tour' the colors with the kids before we start so they can see every glaze available. Scarab beetles were passed out, brushes were grabbed, and they got to work!

I based our color palette off of the lapis lazuli amulet example from this post. I encouraged students to experiment with mixing colors but gave no explicit directions. You'll see there were students who went for symmetry and neatness. There were others who just went with the flow. In the end, there's no wrong way to glaze these.

I generally fire everything at cone 05- bisque and glaze ware. Here's a small gallery of finished amulets. The kids were challenged with the amount of scoring and slipping and the fine detail required. I'm proud of each and every one. Happy making!
